On a cold, wet, windy day, there’s nothing better than curling up with a good book in a warm, cosy spot.
With so many modern distractions—TV, games consoles and tablets—it’s lovely to give children a little screen-free downtime in a snug den with a book.
You don’t need to spend much money or time to create a reading nook. Focus on comfort, soft textures and a relaxed feel.
Start by choosing your nook. Depending on your home, this could be a window seat, a comfy chair on a landing, the corner of a bedroom, or even the end of a bed if space is tight. The great thing about nooks is that they can be made almost anywhere.

In our room we made use of the wasted space above the stair void to create a little retreat.

How to make a cosy reading nook
- Pick a small, defined space that feels sheltered.
- Gather throws and cushions in varied textures—wool, faux fur, linen—for warmth and interest.
- Add a padded seat or cushion, then build up soft cushions around the edges for back and side support.
- String fairy lights or a soft lamp overhead for gentle, inviting illumination.
- Keep a basket or small shelf nearby to store books and keep the space tidy.
