A buffalo check plaid Christmas tree on the sunporch.

I love buffalo check, so it’s no surprise that I created another plaid Christmas tree. After updating the sunporch this summer, I was excited to set up a tree in that bright, cozy space. My idea was to place the tree in front of the buffalo check curtains with wingback chairs flanking it, creating a warm, layered vignette perfect for the holidays.
I began without a strict theme and let my ornament stash guide me. I started with gold ribbon and layered in two different plaid ribbons — one red-and-black and one black-and-white buffalo check. The mix ties the look together without matching the curtains too exactly, keeping the arrangement visually interesting and slightly eclectic.
This year I brought red back into my holiday palette, reintroducing a touch of tradition alongside the modern farmhouse vibe. DIY ORNAMENTS
Adding homemade ornaments brings personality to the tree and helps keep costs down. A few of my favorite DIY projects that work well with a buffalo check theme:
- DIY Mercury Glass Ornaments — elegant, reflective accents that contrast nicely with plaid.
- Mini Embroidery Hoop Ornaments — a great way to add texture and handmade charm.
- Snowflake Ornaments — delicate shapes that add a wintry touch.
- DIY Buffalo Check Ornaments — perfect for echoing the tree’s plaid motif.

Put a bird on it
Bird ornaments are a family tradition for me. Growing up, my parents had two white doves on their tree, joined by a tiny ring they held in their beaks. Since then, I always include birds on my trees — a few here and there or a dozen — because they add nostalgia and a soft, classic feel.

Unconventional tree toppers
I prefer to avoid typical store-bought tree toppers and look for objects I can repurpose. For this tree I used a vintage-style star that started life as a wall hanging. With a few simple adjustments it became the perfect unconventional topper, lending character and a collected feel to the display.
