Show some asparagus love

Asparagus is one of my favorite vegetables. If you want more ways to cook it, try different methods such as air frying or skillet roasting for varied textures and flavors.

Summer grilling

Foil packets are ideal for warm-weather grilling: easy to assemble, simple to season, and fast to clean up. Prep the asparagus, add the seasonings, wrap in foil, and place on the grill for perfectly cooked spears.

Fresh vegetables shine in summer; serve these alongside other favorites like grilled corn, garlicky grilled broccoli, or stuffed zucchini for a colorful plate.

How to Grill Asparagus

You can grill asparagus directly on the grates, but foil packets eliminate the risk of spears falling through and make turning easier. Packets also keep the asparagus moist and evenly cooked.

They’re quick to assemble and produce tender, well-seasoned asparagus in minutes.

Choosing which asparagus to buy

Thicker asparagus tends to be meatier with a stronger flavor, while thin stalks are often more tender and sweeter. For grilling, medium-thickness spears are a great compromise and cook evenly.

Look for stalks with tightly closed tips, bright green or slightly purple-tinged color, and firm stems that don’t wilt when held upright.

Storing asparagus

Store asparagus in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. If you need to store it for several days, trim about an inch from the bottoms and stand the stalks upright in a jar with a little water, covering the jar with a plastic bag. Replace the water if it becomes cloudy, similar to fresh-cut flowers.

How to prepare asparagus

Snap off the woody ends before cooking. Bend the stalk near the base and it will naturally break where the tender portion begins.

Seasoning asparagus

This recipe keeps seasoning simple: oil, salt, pepper, and Parmesan so the asparagus flavor can shine. If you want to vary the flavors, try:

  • Garlicky: add ½ teaspoon garlic powder or Italian seasoning.
  • Bright: finish with lemon zest or a squeeze of lemon.
  • Savory-sweet: drizzle with a little balsamic vinegar.
  • Crunch: top with toasted sliced almonds.
  • Cheese variations: swap Parmesan for crumbled feta or Cotija for a different finish.

How long does it take to grill?

Cooking time depends on asparagus thickness and your grill’s heat. Medium spears typically take about 10–15 minutes on high heat, flipping once halfway through. Thin spears will finish sooner, and thick spears may need a bit longer. Keep an eye on them and test for fork tenderness.

Can I Bake these packets?

Yes. Bake assembled foil packets at 425°F for 10–15 minutes, or until the asparagus is fork-tender. Baking is a convenient option for cooler months or when the grill isn’t available.
