Orange Mango Freeze Recipe: Refreshing Frozen Drink for Summer

Orange mango freeze is a delightful frozen treat that combines tropical mango with bright citrus for a spoonable, icy-smooth dessert. I make this fruity freeze for breakfast, an afternoon pick-me-up, or a simple summer dessert—though its refreshing flavor works any time of year.

Hometown favorite treat!

This orange mango freeze is inspired by a beloved hometown favorite—the orange freeze from Merlino’s Orange Freeze (now The Hagen’s Original Orange Freeze) in Sacramento, California. That icy citrus drink left a lasting impression on me.

The taste of fresh oranges

The authentic orange flavor is key. The original freeze tasted like real oranges—cold and icy yet silky. Images of orange crates and piles of peels always came to mind when we visited, and that unmistakable citrus flavor kept us coming back. Whenever I’m home, I head straight for an orange freeze—it’s one of my favorite treats.

Orange, mango, passion fruit, peach

While the classic orange freeze inspired this recipe, I like to add a few complementary ingredients to build depth and tropical character. This version blends orange juice with frozen mango chunks, peach citrus soda (Fresca), frozen passion fruit purée, and a fresh mandarin or tangerine. The result is richer than an Orange Julius and more refreshing than a simple juice smoothie.

To make it, combine orange juice, frozen mango, peach citrus soda, passion fruit purée, and a whole mandarin with a bit of peel in a blender. Because the mixture is thick, stop occasionally to scrape down the sides and ensure everything purees smoothly. The finish is thick enough to enjoy with a spoon.

Mandarin orange magic

Using a whole mandarin with a small portion of peel might seem unusual, but the peel adds a bright, zesty note that lifts the whole drink. The peach soda contributes a subtle fizz that enhances the texture and flavor without overpowering the fruit.

If you enjoy fruity slushes like Jamba Juice’s Mango-a-Go-Go, Starbucks’ iced guava passion fruit drinks, or Tropical Smoothie’s mango blends, you’ll likely love this orange mango freeze. It sits somewhere between a slushy, a smoothie, and a sorbet—light, fruity, and irresistibly refreshing.

If you’re a fan of frozen citrus and tropical flavors, this recipe will be a new favorite. Enjoy!
